The AGS:
Past & Present

The AGS was founded as the Conference of University Teachers of German in Great Britain and Ireland (CUTG) in 1932. In 2009 it became the Association for German Studies in Britain and Ireland.

The biggest professional association for university-level German Studies in Great Britain and Ireland, the AGS seeks to support, foster, and increase the visibility, vitality and inclusivity of German Studies in Britain and Ireland.

Our long-standing annual conference focuses on cutting-edge research in German Studies. Since 2020, we have offered grants for conferences and workshops.

Conferences are arranged, and in general the affairs of the Association are conducted, by an Executive Committee.

Committee members are elected at the annual business meeting of the AGS (which is held during the annual conference), and normally serve for three years.

The AGS supports postgraduate scholars with its travel grants, and offers publication grants for early career researchers without institutional support.

Set up in Summer 2021, the AGS Working Group on Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) matters is chaired by Sascha Stollhans and seeks to facilitate concrete progress in EDI matters.

Discussions and and communications (including job and funding opportunities) are enabled by the AGS-recognised JISC mailing list for German Studies, which you can join here
